Job Title: Shelter-Intervention Advocate
Supervisor: Shelter Coordinator
Location: Talsunne Safe House
Hours: 5:30pm-12:00am –shift and/or weekend day 9am-5pm
Employment Status: non-exempt, hourly, $11.00 hour.

Summary: Work as an integral part of the Safe House and Intervention team by providing oversight to the shelter, advocacy to the residents, crisis line and intervention response.
Applicants must be able to respond within fifteen minutes to Three Rivers Community Hospital and Grants Pass Public Safety requests for in-person advocacy.
- Represent the mission, values and philosophy of Women’s Crisis Support Team to program participants, staff and the to the general public.
- Appropriately manage confidential information.
- Complete necessary program documentation, inputting daily statistics, logs, etc.
- Answer crisis line and respond to intervention calls for advocacy from law enforcement or the hospital; provide information and referrals; provide safety planning, crisis intervention and screening for the Safe House; and other WCST services.
- Orient new residents to the Safe House and WCST services and properly manage intake and exit processes. Provide advocacy, education and support for residents.
- Routine maintenance of the shelter facility
- Responsible for assuring the premises are clean and orderly by performing cleaning
- Sorting donations during the shift
- Provide oversight during the shift and keep the shelter running smoothly.
- Provide transportation for shelter residents or off site victims.
- Attend meetings and trainings as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and underserved communities.
- Bilingual (English-Spanish) and /or Bi-cultural preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence/sexual assault and the impact on adult and child survivors.
- Knowledge of community resources, agency networking and ability to offer peer counseling.
- Demonstrate ability to remain calm, make sound decisions, give clear direction and provide strong leadership in crisis situations.
- Experience working with survivors of domestic violence preferred.
- Experience in crisis intervention preferred.
- Must have excellent judgment and strong interpersonal skills.
- Must be well organized, creative, empathetic, and people oriented.
- Experience in word processing, email, and Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel
- Must have transportation, current insurance coverage, and a valid driver’s license.
- Successful completion of WCST 40+ hour advocacy program (may be completed after hiring) and Advocate Certification

Intervention Advocate Posted 10.29.2015
WCST seeks two qualified advocates for job share arrangement consisting approx. 22 hours a week. The Intervention Advocates will support the Intervention program and will participate in our staff rotation of back up after hour/weekend on call response. Applicants must live within a fifteen minute drive to respond to the hospital.
The following duties are assigned to the Intervention advocate:
- answering the crisis line and providing phone advocacy,
- helping victims develop a safety plan,
- accessing all needed resources and information for victims,
- helping victims obtain Temporary Restraining Orders, Elder Abuse Restraining Orders, and Stalking Orders, and advocacy in both civil and criminal courts
- In-person advocacy in emergency situations such as domestic violence and/or sexual assault.
- In-person peer counseling.
- Logging statistical information for monthly statistical reporting.
- Regularly giving Client Feedback forms to persons served.
- providing transportation for the people we serve,
- facilitating the Family Abuse Awareness Class,
- Presentations at volunteer/staff training and community partner agencies
- May be asked to represent WCST at community partner meetings
The Intervention Advocate will schedule crisis line response, including the coordination of volunteers and the individuals responsible for 24-hour crisis response.
The Intervention Advocate will respond to requests for emergency in-person advocacy for victims of domestic violence or sexual assault on a 24/7 basis during her week on. This position will also be asked to help victims fill out and follow through on Temporary Restraining Orders and Stalking Orders, and may attend additional court sessions for other issues related to the abuse or violence. The Advocate may be asked to set up one-on-one peer counseling appointments with victims.
This position will be a primary connector with other service agencies in the community, developing an understanding of all programs, their restrictions and entry points, and advocating with their staff for services to clients.
Be prepared to provide requested training on domestic violence and associated issues to agency partners, WCST staff and volunteers, and to shelter residents. This position will work with the Prevention Education Program to train volunteers with class presentations and as mentor for volunteers who are shadowing office procedures or crisis response.
Working with the Intervention Coordinator, all advocates will assist in gathering statistical documentation of volunteer hours and client contacts.
In addition, the Intervention Advocate will be expected to attend staff meetings of the WCST and to attend any mandatory staff trainings. Because of the complex nature of the work of the WCST, staff may sometimes be asked to fill in for the duties of an absent or sick staff member when appropriate.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Previous experience working with people in crisis, required
- Knowledge of and compassion toward survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault
- An understanding of the root causes of violence toward women is essential.
- Experience in or willingness to learn cultural competency is required.
- An AA or BA degree in Human Services or extensive knowledge of domestic violence issues and an understanding of the effects of domestic violence on families.
- Computer proficiency, specifically in the areas of word processing and data management, is a plus.
- Ability to perform responsibilities efficiently, and independently with professional judgment.
- A valid Oregon Driver’s License and vehicle insurance
- Bi-lingual Spanish/English, preferred

Compensation includes hourly pay plus additional on-call and backup response time.
