Job Title: Prevention Educator                                
Department: WCST WINGS Prevention Program
Supervisor: Prevention Program Coordinator
Location: Public Office, local schools, community
FLSA Status: part time, non-exempt
Hours/week: 24 hours per week
Wage:$14.50-$16.50 per hour, DOE

Position Summary:
WCST WINGS is a school-based, trauma informed, positive youth development program. WINGS provides opportunities for youth to develop emotional and social competencies needed to make safe, healthy decisions and to reject engagement in violence, unhealthy relationships and substance abuse. WINGS promotes safe, protective environments and uses a gender equity approach that is built on the Socio-economical Model, Effective Principals of Prevention, and the Public Health Model. WINGS primary strategy focus is on violence prevention. The Prevention Educator is an integral part of our prevention team, whose primary duties will be the enhancement and delivery of violence prevention strategies in area schools, youth mentorship, and the promotion of community building strategies that decrease interpersonal violence. As a member of the prevention team, the Prevention Educator will assist in organization of community outreach events, public speaking engagements, development and maintenance of community partnerships, and trainings. They will work closely with other prevention professionals at WCST and within the Josephine County community to bring the highest level of violence prevention services to area schools.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate educational programming in classrooms using best practices and evidence based curriculum.
  • With support of the Prevention Program Coordinator, partner with local schools and provide resources, information and training pertaining to violence prevention.
  • Attend and actively participate in community meetings and cohorts that focus on the overall health of our community.
  • Assist in development, administration, analysis, interpretation, and promotion of outcomes and results of WCST prevention activities.
  • Properly track and log all WCST prevention (and school-based intervention) activities and participation statistics.
  • Professionally represent WCST in area schools, at community events, fundraisers, and social activities.
  • Remain relevant to area youth conducting research and analysis of current events, current youth culture, use of violence in society, and social and cultural pressures facing youth. Maintain leadership in prevention education by connecting with current research, best practices, and participation in prevention trainings, webinars, and education activities.
  • Engage and participate in awareness activities regarding violence prevention, particularly gender based violence. Organize and implement community outreach activities for Domestic Violence Awareness Month (OCT), Teen Dating Awareness Month (FEB), and Sexual Assault Awareness Month (APR)
 
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, social work or equivalent life experience or education. Prevention Specialist Certification preferred or strong desire to pursue certification.
  • Knowledge of Comprehensive Violence Prevention.
  • Experienced and passionate about working with youth/teens.
  • Excellent group facilitation and classroom management skills with youth/teens.
  • Proven ability to relate effectively and respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds and to promote a culturally diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Ability to discuss comfortably issues regarding interpersonal violence, sexuality, and healthy relationships with youth, their school community (including teachers, administration and coaches), and parents.
  • Experience working with the education system- including public schools and districts- or with a similar large system.
  • Ability to network and collaborate with a wide array of community partners, including schools, police, and other non-profits.
  • Demonstrate strong skills in writing, communication, and organization.
  • Flexible and able to prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office-Word and Excel, e-mail, internet technologies, and power point technologies, including projectors and sound equipment.
 
Other Requirements:
  • Participate in the WCST 40 hour basic DV/SA training, required by our DOJ grantors, to be completed in the first year.
  • Participate in Certified Prevention Specialist trainings as offered.
  • Candidate must comply with WCST policies, procedures and safety regulations as communicated in writing and verbally by their supervisor.
  • Current valid Oregon Driver’s License with safe driving record and have private insurance.
  • Must consent to and pass a criminal background check.
  • Candidate must agree, in writing, to maintain confidentiality of students/survivors and agency at all times.
 
Work Environment: This position will work primarily in area schools and at WCST’s public office where office space will be provided. Work hours will be completed at WCST’s public office, in area schools, and within the community. School schedules will dictate exact working hours and flexibility will be required. This position will often work under deadlines and sometimes stressful conditions.
